Homemade Hummus Ingredients

You only need 7 basic ingredients to make this easy homemade hummus recipe!

  • Soak the Chickpeas. In this recipe you can use 2 cups of dried chickpeas. Place the dried chickpeas in a large bowl, cover with plenty of filtered water. Let them soak overnight or for at least 8 hours.

  • Drain and rinse the soaked chickpeas. Place them in a large pot and cover with several inches of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours until the chickpeas are very soft. Skim off any foam that forms on the surface. Drain and allow the chickpeas to cool slightly.

  • Tahini. A good amount of good-quality tahini is the key to smooth hummus. I use 1/3 cup in my recipe.

  • Olive oil. I blend 2 tablespoons of olive oil into the dip, and I love to serve it with an extra drizzle of oil on top!

  • Fresh lemon juice. Squeeze 1 lemon it yourself for the brightest and most vibrant flavour. Be careful not to include the seeds, use a strainer or squeeze it by hand.

  • Garlic. I use two fresh garlic clove in my basic recipe.

  • Water. I start with 4 tablespoons and add more, as needed, to give it a delectable light, fluffy texture!

  • Sea salt. I use 1 teaspoon to heighten the bright, nutty flavours in this recipe.

How to make hummus

After gathering your ingredients, you can whip up this recipe in a single step! Simply combine the chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, water, garlic, and salt in a high-speed blender, and blend until smooth. That's all there is to it!

While blending, gradually add more water as necessary to achieve your preferred consistency. If your blender comes with a tamper, consider using it to assist in the blending process.

Variations of Hummus Recipes

In the hummus aisle of any grocery store, you'll encounter numerous seasoning options! Don't hesitate to experiment with various flavours in your own kitchen. While I enjoy the traditional version, when I crave something different, I often explore one of these variations:

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin and/or coriander adds an extra layer of flavour to spice it up.

  • Add roasted red peppers. blend in 1 roasted red pepper, 1/4 cup toasted almonds, and 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika.

  • Add spoonful’s of pesto, to taste, to make an extra-lemony, herbaceous dip.

  • Blend in 1/2 cup fresh parsley, cilantro, or basil, or up to 1 cup spinach for a green hummus.

  • Add some cooked beets and turn into a pink beet hummus.

Hummus Serving Suggestions

Once you have hummus on hand in the fridge, you’ll find a thousand ways to use it. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Enjoy it with veggies or crackers as a quick snack.

  • Slather it onto cute crostini to serve as an appetizer.

  • Add it to your next sandwich or wrap! I like it on wraps or sandwiches.

  • Stir in water to thin it to a drizzle-able consistency. Then, use it as a salad dressing for your favourite fresh and roasted veggies.
